Dumb question about belts?
Dumb question about belts?
What can make a belt squeek other than poor tension? My POS mechanic said my belt has proper tension even though my car squeeks until it warms up and the squeeks appear to be effected by RPMs. I had the same problem a year ago and got the belt changed and the problem went away until now. I my mechanic just a POS and it's loose or can it be something else? Thanks. (BTW the belt looks fine visually inspecting it)
Re: Dumb question about belts?
Poor tension would make the belt vibrate/flap around. I've had perfectly good looking belts squeal. I'm presently running a Goodyear Gatorback belt that's been on there for 50K miles with no issues.
Re: Dumb question about belts?
Thanks so excuse my ignorance again, how hard is it to replace the belt myself, keeping in mind I have not done this since I owned a chevy citation... Is it a total pain to get the tension right as in using a crowbar to tighten things? This squeeking bugs the heck out of me...
Re: Dumb question about belts?
The LT1 has a spring loaded tensioner so no adjustment is needed. Jack up the front of the car, relieve the spring tension on the belt tensioner with a 13mm socket and a long ratchet or breaker bar and remove the old belt. Take note of the routing of the belt to replace the new one.
