Double Overdrive in a 4L60E

With my 4.10's and the gas prices I want to have my cake and eat it too. Is the Double OD kit something good on a performance setup? Any negatives?

I guess I'm really curious to see what Frank has to say about it. This will give me a final drive ratio of very close to what I had with 2.73's

Well, the 2 biggest drawbacks are weight and the cost.

Yep $2500 or about $3000 CDN. Now in CDN $ I spend about $3000/yr in gas. If I save 15% per year (high estimate) thats about $450 per year. The break even point would be about 7 years and saving only 10% gas is about 10years.

Not really worth it. But cool none the less.

I wonder if it shifts hard through all 8 gears? How would it work with a shift kit? I "could" pay for itself in time if it lasts long enough.

If gas stays the same price... Say its it increased 50% more over 5 years, you may hit break even a bit sooner.

Yeah I have to wonder if it would fit in an F-body. Its a big expense just for the unit. You would then need a new driveshaft and from the looks of it I dont think your TQ arm will fit either.

Great piece but probably not a cheap install in an F-body with a TQ arm.

Here's a Nova with a TH400 running through 6gears! Long Clip, the test drive is near the end.

Frank, those are the cons, any pros to running this set-up on a drag car? Or would just having one of your transmissions and the optimum converter be all that one needs? Thanks, Rick.
Z28Dreamer, seems like a good idea for your set-up, and I do believe I've heard the unit has a pretty good resale value if you get one and decide down the road to sell it.

I dont see how weight and cost are pros here. I understand it on any other car that does not already have an OD. But we are specifically talking about a F-body here.

$2500 for the unit, you will add some weight but its probably ony a few hundred pounds. You need a custom made driveshaft ($350) and you wound be able to use a TQ arm with that piece. Who knows how much that will cost to overcome.

BTW, if its a drag car the extra gear(s) are not optimum here. You want the least amount of shifts and you want to be in high gear as quickly as possible.

Now like they stated in the article you will want more gears if you are a tractor trailer. Strap 80,000 lbs to you butt and pull it up a hill at 65 mph and you do benifit from more gears

Most only use 3 gears in the quarter mile anyway. I think a properly built A4 is all you'll ever need.
