Do I NEED a transmission jack to remove my 4L60E?
From what I understand you can use a good floor jack and a peice of wide piece of wood. you just have to be careful to get it in the right spot to balance it. I would get a friend to help stablize it as you lower it to make sure it doesnt fall
I have not yet removed mine, but I am about to in a couple months for a rebuild. maybe some one elese could chime in. should work though. good luck man

I used a piece of wood and the regular jack when I did my converter swap. That sucked pretty bad.. I won't be doing that again.
I've seen it mentioned on here that places like Autozone rent them out, but when I went and asked they gave me the same blank look they always do when you ask them about anything besides tire shine or chrome valve stem caps.

The autozone near me had a ASE master certified mechanic there for awhile. he hurt his back after working at a dealership for several years. He impressed the hell out of me because he was the first ever autozone employee i didnt have to explain things to 12 times.

You can use a floor jack and a large piece of wood, it's really not that bad. Make sure you have a buddy to help, though. Postion the head of the jack so that it sits toward the front of the pan, that's where the balance point is.
