Question Differential spider gears or pinion causing my 'hum' ?

'95 Camaro V6 3.4L
stock 3.23 gears

Ok, 'humming' from the rear end. Replaced both wheel bearings & both carrier bearings. I was sure it was the passenger carrier bearing.. IT WASN'T!!

The 'humming' noise comes while the car is rolling.. acceleration makes no difference. If I'm coasting, its humming. The faster the speed, the louder the hum.

After replacing 4 bearings and nothing, now I'm wondering if the spider gears need replacing. What are some the the symptoms of worn/old spider gears that need to be replaced? Where can I buy a kit?

Thanks!

I'm no expert, but sounds like you might have a carrier/pinion spacing issue. My friend and I tried to install 4.11's in his rear and had that same humming noise because we couldn't get the spacing right.

When the humming started it was real faint, then gradually got louder and louder. Are you saying the pinion is slowly moving further and further out of the differential casing?

Too much backlash is what causes humming when you're talking about a ring/pinion, correct?

One thing I should throw in there is the amount of play there is when I hand-turn the driveshaft back and forth. The play is about 1/6in. Would this be a positive indicator that the hum is caused from improper/too much backlash?
