Differential dilemma
Differential dilemma
I'm running a strange 12 bolt with the eaton 33 spline "super strength" posi, and proceeded to destroy the side gears on my 3rd track trip this past may. I called strange and it was a couple months out of warranty which is a year, but said send it in and they'd see what could be done. I send it back and they call and say the diff needs side gears and spider gears which I already knew from taking it out. He said they will rebuild it for free if I buy the gears, fine with me good deal. The catch is the supplier of the gears (us gear) is no longer making them and knowbody knows when or if they will start back.
So..... I'm thinking about a Detroit locker but it won't retain abs to my knowledge, which I would prefer to keep
I'm not convinced true trac is strong enough since this posi broke easily
Prefer to not go spool route since it's primarily a street driven weekend car
Any suggestion? Thanks
Kevin

Re: Differential dilemma
I bought my Strange 12-bolt with the optional ABS setup, but the sensor that Strange uses is not very reliable. So I no longer have ABS. I've never noticed a problem, but it's to the point where it's basically a track-only car, and I never even get to the track any more.
I'm surprised you have a problem with the Eaton posi. I beat the crap out of mine, particularly when it had the T56 with a Street Twin, and was suffering from 6K clutch dumps on slicks. A buddy of mine had a 97 30th SS convertible that ate up a standard Eaton in a Strange 12-bolt, but he was making 750HP with a 383/Vortech S/C setup, and didn't realize there was a "super strength" option. The standard unit failed from burned clutches, not gear issues.

Re: Differential dilemma
I have noticed the abs light will turn on sporadically. If I go the locker route can the abs light be turned off or just live with it?
Another option is for me to find a different manufacture of the gears, which I have. Yukon and nitro gear. The guy at Strange said the yukon's suck and that the eaton (US Gear) gears are forged so I dont want to go with them if thats the case. I can't really find much on Nitro gear, but I know they are made in the US. Any experience with either of these companies? I have sent an email to nitro for more information.
I was taken back by it breaking that easily, 3500 clutch dump with a new street twin on ET Streets. I though I shelled out all that money to avoid this problem, not dump more into it

Re: Differential dilemma
All you have to do is take the bulb out of the dash cluster.
What are your concerns with the US/Stange Pro-Street gears? If got a set of 4.11's and they are fine

Re: Differential dilemma
I have a Detroit in my car and haven't missed the ABS that much to be honest with you- but its not my DD either.
I will say this, while I am confident I won't break it, it does have its downfalls too- it will break loose to allow tight turning, but usually only after it chatters once or twice- and backing up it doesn't like to break loose as easily- so maneuvering in tight parking lots can be a little annoying at times.

Re: Differential dilemma
I hate to spend the money but it looks like Detroit locker is my only option for a street car with my power goals once I build a motor. I'm not to worried about the pops, bangs, and chirps, but I still enjoy pushing it through a sweeping corner at triple digits on the occasion. Is this doable with a locker and it's inherant unpredictability? Thanks again
