Dana 60 Owners

I wanted to get some info from any of the members that purchased a Dana 60 rear end. Kind of a progress report. Please post your experience with the new rear end. Good or bad...noisey or not...installation issues...whatever. Thanks

The Dana 60s are a very strong, but also "very large” rear-end assemblies. Due to the large amount of “rotating mass” (really big ring/pinion gears and differential carrier) you’re going to lose some additional HP with the Dana rear-end. Possibly much more than a 12-bolt, or 9”. Strange has some side-by-side pitures of their S-60 (Dana) and 12-bolt ring and pinions. The Dana's are massive, but it will take some HP away to "spin-up" all that extra iron!

Have many people purchesed them from here? They dont seem very popular. I have read they have some noise issues? Question...What is the quietest gear (342) I can buy for a 12 bolt rebuild. I have heard that motive is quiet but I guess they have 2 different gear sets available. Any info would be great.

Numbers published by Evan Smith in National Dragster show that because of the reduced offset between the pinion shaft axis and the axle centerline, the Dana 60 has LOWER drivetrain losses than either the 12-bolt or the 9-inch:

Dana 60: 5%
GM 12-Bolt: 7%
Ford 9-inch: 10%

I've had US/Strange Pro-Streets in 3.73 and 4.10 for my 12-bolt, and they are both quiet.

Thanks for the help. I would love to get the dana but I want to hear from more owners first. I have a 12 bolt available used but the rebuild will cost me as much as the dana. The 12 bolt has LS1 rear brakes on it which would be an upgrade to my LT1 set up I think.

That is interesting to learn (from actual testing) the Dana 60 has 2% less loss than the 12 bolt. How does the weight of the Dana and 12-bolt compare?

The Strange advertisements claim the Strange 60 weighs "about" 25# more than their 12-bolt. But I've seen someone say their 60 weighed over 200#, and I know my 12-bolt was 165# wet.

I have an s-60 in my 02 formula, i just put it in 3 weeks ago. it went in with no problems at all. strange really thought of everything as far as swapping it out to stock placement. mine even came with brackets welded on for rear sway bar. as far as power loss I haven't seen any loss at the track. if anything the extra weight on the rear tires has helped my car launch better. so far i have a new best with this rear on motor 1.5 sixty foot 11.6 @114 mph. I did buy it through vengance racing. it was cheaper to go through them instead of going to strange direct.

It looks really good. Big! I think you need longer lug bolts though.

So, in the classic dispute ford 9" or 12 bolt Gm, The Dana 60 is better all the way around? How about fitment as well as brake accomodations? I just blew out the stock 10 bolt and need a new rear end... I have big plans for the car, so, I figured I would go with the rear end able to handle the most... like I did wit h my clutch... thanks

What is the weight of the factory 10-bolt as compared to an aftermarket 12-bolt at 165 lbs (Moser and Strange)?
