Lay the final coat of clear REALLY heavy so that it starts to get whitish looking and leave it. It'll dry extremely clear and smooth. It's a poor man's base coat/clearcoat. Any color would work obviously but I never forget to make it pop with some heavy clear.

You might try Alumahyde. Its a gun paint that can be bought from online places like Brownell. Its an Expoxy instead of an enamel. It also says that it can take all sorts of aggressive cleaners. I have painted a few of my gun things with it and I like the stuff. A lot of people use brake cleaner to clean their guns and claim it holds up to that. Its about $10 per aresol can though.

Wow Fred... You are just a wealth of information! Thanks for that link! So epoxy based paint should be the ticket for longevity, huh?

 

LOL in my post it said you can get it at Brownells. Well I guess for $20 you can find out as it shouldn't take more than 2 cans.

 

yup, you are right! I re-read... seems I missed that part. my bad. I have to paint the chrome moly driveshaft as well...
I dont want to find out, I want to make sure to use the right stuff, as I dont want to pull the rear out to reshoot it later, ya know? That is why I was seeing what people used, and how it held up to the elements..

 

You might check some gun forums out or something and see if people mention how well it holds up. I just know it holds up to solvents and cleaners and if its used on guns you know it can take some heat too. I could be wrong but I think the paint most body men use on cars is epoxy. I know I've heard my body man mention epoxy before.

I used Krylon grey primer and then two coats of krylon flat black on the whole setup. 1.5 yrs later it is still holding up with no rust. Make sure you get all the preservative off with brake cleaner.
