Talking the dana 60 just showed up, what paint to use?

just like it says, just seein what you all think.

My thoughts is clean it and spray bomb it black, then undercoat it for longevity.

What have you done, or what have you heard?

Thanks
Cody

I cleaned my Strange 12-bolt with tri-sodium phostphate, rinsed it well, dried it with compressed air. Painted it with Krylon enamel spray cans, gloss-black everywhere but the center section. For that I use "hammered" silver, so it looked more like cast aluminum.

Interesting article in the new (April 08) issue of GM High-Tech Performance. They installed the Strange 60 in one 4th Gen (LS1), and a Moser M9 in a different 4th Gen (LS1). The results, as far as drivetrain losses were not what was expected:

Strange 60 install:

Original setup:
-GM 10-bolt
-3.42 gears
-154.6#
-412.5 rwHP
-390.0 rwLB-FT

New setup
-Strange 60
-3.73 gears
-222.8# (+68#)
-397.9 rwHP (3.5% loss)
-376.0 rwLB-FT (3.6% loss)

Moser M9 install:

Original setup:
-GM 10-bolt
-3.42 gears
-154.6#
-441.2 rwHP
-432.3 rwLB-FT

New setup
-Moser M9
-3.70 gears
-205.6# (+51#)
-436.6 rwHP (1.0% loss)
-428.6 rwLB-FT (0.9% loss)

As clarified in the article, changing the rear axle ratio changes the "rw" results, so the losses are complicated because of the new rear axle ratios.

I weighed my Strange 12-bolt, and I thought is was only 10# heavier than my 10-bolt, at around 165#??????

I use Hammerite paint on mine. Very durable hammered look finish in one brushed on coat.

Back in 1999 when I bought it from T. Byrne Motorsports on a group purchase, it was about $2,700 delivered. That included upgrades like the Eaton super-strength posi, LPW aluminum cover, and 3-channel ABS. I don't think the price has gone up since then... might even have gone down.

I did steal Fred's paint scheme and then used it on my Strange 12-bolt!

How does the VHT paint hold up? I am leaning towards that. Its tough, and its been on my engine block for a year now with no issues with heat. The rear gets warm, but not that warm. Will that be good? Do they make their own primer or not?

I used some of there stuff on my cage. Was not impressed....seemed like regular old paint to me.....

I used it on my rear too, its still on there but all faded and dull.....that was in 01 or so when I got it....but I have a 9" with aluminum center so I naturally have the look you guys are trying to copy with the 12 bolts...
