Clutch install questions
Clutch install questions
Ok, I have a 91Z w/5speed. Clutch was slipping bad at the track so I decided to replace it with a Spec stage 2. I replaced the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing. I also had the flywheel turned. I put it all back together and while still up on jack stands started it. With the clutch pedal to the floor I put it in gear and the tires were spinning pretty good. It was suggested that because I let the actuator hang there while changing everything air got in the system, so i tried to bleed it only to find that once I opened the bleed screw it would not close. Changed the hydraulics. It was uneventful except while removing the cap from the end of the piston, the piston slipped out a little, but all seemed well. Started it again - same thing - tires spinning. Bled the system a little - no air found. I can drive the car around the block and once it's rolling it drives normal, I just cannot disengage the clutch all the way. This is driving me nuts as I'm ready to snap
Can anyone offer any insight or offer suggestions I might try. Sorry for the length, but I hope the description is somewhat clear.
Thanks for any help!!

Re: Clutch install questions
Other than the possibility that your clutch fluid is too low, you might be looking at a bent clutch disc. If it is slightly warped at all, it will not disengage all the way. If you weren't using a transmission jack, there is a possibility of you warping the disc during the install. Also, it could have been a bad disc that you received from Spec. I had a similar situation with McLeod and they refunded my money.
When you torqued the pressure plate to the flywheel, did you torque in small increments and in a star pattern? If not, you could have side loaded the disc. Also make sure that the clutch fork is on correctly.

Re: Clutch install questions
Thanks. I did torque it down in a star pattern. First I tighened the bolts by hand, then with a small 3/8" ratchet, then I torqed them down. I also used a transmission jack. How did you determine the disc was bad?? After I got my flywheel back, I set the disc on it and spun it around checking various things. If I end up having to take this apart is there a way to visibly inspect the disc??
Thanks again
Thanks again
Re: Clutch install questions
Sounds like you did everything right. Not sure what your problem could be, other than a bent disc. If you end up pulling everything down again, you could set the trans on the ground, and put the disc on the input shaft. Hold up a straightedge to the disc and have someone spin the input shaft. Watch for any out-of-roundness as the disc spins. Hopefully you won't have to take the trans down again, but I'm out of ideas.
