Clutch Fork Install Question

How do you know if that thing is right. I slipped it onto the throw-bearing and slid the tranny up to the bellhousing and touched the clutch fork and it fell back down. I pushed it back up in there, but I don't know if it is right. It feels like it goes into the right spot. I thought maybe I'd be able to push on it with a rod and get it to move a little bit, but I can't. I have a Spec Stage 3 clutch and pressure plate. It is sticking out like 1/4-1/2" from the bellhousing. What can I do to ensure this is right. I had a buddy "pop" his hydraulic line because he didn't have his in right.

Thanks,
Benji

Re: Clutch Fork Install Question

The best way IMHO to install the fork is to first completely bolt up the tranny to the bell housing.
You will slide the fork in toward the tranny and capture the TOB. It is kind of hard to tell if you did it right cause once it is captured it will still be sloppy. Install the slave and gently push the pedal, if the pedal feels hard the you either dont have the fork or the slave push rod installed right.
Another way to tell if the fork is in right the face of the fork will be nearly flush with the face of the bell housing if you apply pressure just like the slave push rod does.
Once you have done this a few times it becomes automatic.
Just be careful when you press the pedal the first time, the hydraulics will explode if somthing is not right cause the fluid has to go somewhere, thats what happened to your buddy.

Re: Clutch Fork Install Question

If I try to push on it with a rod, it seems to want to slip down off of the TOB and butt up against the bellhousing. I cannot get mine flush with the bellhousing, it wants to stick out a 1/2" or so. I've heard of ppl shimming the slave cylinders with Spec clutch assemblies and I wonder if that is why. I will try with the pedal when I get a chance. I'm doing the A4 to t56 swap and working on getting the pedals in now. Truly a PITA. I appreciate it.

Re: Clutch Fork Install Question

Shimming it will get you nothing cause the hydraulics will self adjust and compensate for you shim.
Seriously, unless something is bad wrong or installed correctly this is a very easy process. Its just a tad tricky till you are used to it.

Re: Clutch Fork Install Question

did you check to see if the pivot point is broken at all. There is a small metal clip with a single bolt in it that is attached to the tranny. the fork must slide into that as well as the TOB. the metal clip has 2 ears on it that have a bend in them to secure the fork in place. If yours is broken, you may be able to get one through the dealer but I doubt it. I think jagsthatrun.com might have it.

Re: Clutch Fork Install Question

I tried tonight to get it to work and I can't. Is there supposed to be a bracket or anything in between the slave cylinder and the tranny? Or do you just bolt it on with the two bolts? Everytime I tried to push the pedal, the clutch fork would pop back down off of the pressure plate. I can't get it flush with the bellhousing either. It seems to stick out like 1/4" or a little more. I hope I don't have to pull the tranny back off, I'm ready for this swap to be over with.

Re: Clutch Fork Install Question

first off, do you have that small piece of aluminum that installs over the 2 long studs where the rod goes? Trust me, you will know when the fork is fully pressed into its spot. it will almost pop into place. as long as the TOB is in the right place, I remember mine having 2 flat sides to it, and the snap clip thingy is in place, you should have no problems at all.
