Cant figure out which is better.....Torque converter guru's in here please
OK heres the deal, I have a lockup 4L60E Art Carr tranny with a Art Carr 3200 stall.
Art Car tells me to lock up only in 3rd and 4th gear
My engine builder tells me to lockup in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear
What should I do ?
If I leave the converter unlocked in 2nd gear at the top end of 2nd gear the car feels weak because the converter is slipping.
If I lock up the converter in 2nd gear it kind of feels a little slower when it first shifts into 2nd gear but pulls harder at the upper RPMs.
Who is right ? Art Carr said not to lockup because I dont have enough momentum to yet. But my engine builder disagrees.

You should be locking up at part throttle only. 3rd & 4th, or 4th gear is fine. You should never lockup the TC at WOT unless you are trying to get "top speed" out on the highway. If you lockup the TC at the drags, and you improve your performance, then the torque converter is not built/designed correctly to match your vehicle.

So why should I or shouldnt I lock the TC in 3rd gear?
So from my understanding I should leave the covnerter unlocked ALWAYS while on the street during WOT. And I COULD lock up 3rd gear at the track if I wanted to but I shouldnt have to ?
Please someone explain this to me

Most lock up converters will have a short life if locked up at WOT.But if it is capable of reliably locking up at WOT you can lock up at the top of 3rd at the strip and gain a couple of mph and a little ET. But you do not want to be locked up when changing gears at WOT - that's very hard on the tranny.
