Can you have a anti-ballooning plate installed?

If I buy a used converter that does not have a anti-ballooning plate can I have one installed when I have the converter cut open and checked out? Also what does a anti-ballooning plate do? I know you need one for nitrous.. But why? Thanks..

You should be able to have a plate welded on when it's rebuilt. The balooning plate keeps the converter from balooning, which means it gains internal clearance. This is mostly due to internal pressure.

It may not turn out to much of a bargain to get a used converter in your circumstance as it will probably cost in the $200 range or more to have it freshened up.
