Broken ring gear
I have 95 camaro, z28. Replaced differential gears to 4.10 and new bearings
in may, 2010. Everything was fine. In the last year light vibration developed in drive train. Couple months ago had drivetrain shop to check drive shaft for balance. They told me, everything is fine, and they re torque the pinion nut.? At that time sounded ok. Within couple of weeks a clanking sound started? Every day got louder. Finally looked in to differential and found 3 broken teeth of ring gear.
My question is, could re torque of pinion nut cause the brake?
I should add, I drive hard, when ever I can
Gears and bearings are Motive.
Rebuild LT1 to stock, Vortex super charger, short headers.

Re: Broken ring gear
Manual or automatic trans? Street tires or sticky (drag radials, etc) tires?
The stock 10-bolt is notorious for breaking the ring gear teeth when abused. Run a gear like 4.10's and it increases the chance of failure. If it's a manual trans and sticky tires, plus the blower, the failure was inevitable - just a matter of time. Failed tooth may have been the cause of the vibration. Then more teeth started breaking.

Re: Broken ring gear
Time for a 12-bolt, Strange (Dana) 60 or a 9-inch.
I'm running 4.11's in my Strange 12-bolt, hammered it pretty hard (5,000 - 6,000 RPM clutch dumps with a McLeod Street Twin, full slicks - when it still had the T56) and it's still happy 13 years later.

Re: Broken ring gear
That story's been told many times before but I never get tired of hearing it
Early on, everyone was just astonished that they didn't put better rear ends in our cars. Then it just became a fact of life that they were a piece of crap that needed to be replaced if you wanted to make real power.
