Borg Warner T 56 Differances

I was wondering what the differances are (if any) between the T-56 transmission in the LT1-LS1 Camaros and the LS1 Corvettes, including the ZO6.

Re: Borg Warner T 56 Differances

Big difference. Neither the C4 nor C5 Corvettes used a Borgwarner or Tremec t56 trans. The C4's used one called a ZF six speed (abbreviation for a long German name), The C5's came with either an M6 or M12 six speed, the M6 came in the base C5's and the M12 came in the ZO6's and was geared for better acceleration. I assume the M may be for a Muncie trans but I'm not sure.

Re: Borg Warner T 56 Differances

The C5 (and the C6) used a Tremec T56. But it is not the same unit used in the F-Bodys. It has a completely different case, because it is mounted in the rear, bolted between the C5's center torque tube and the rear differential housing. "MM6" and "M12" are I believe simply the Corvette RPO designations, not a manufaturer code.

In the F-Body, the LS1 and LT1 T56's are not directly interchangeable. The LS1 has a longer input shaft than the LT1 T56. And, the LS1 has a standard "pusher" type clutch, that requires the hydraulic slave cylinder to be mounted to the front plate of the T56, concentric to the input shaft. The LT1 has the oddball "pullback" clutch, that mounts the slave cylinder on the bellhousing.

C5 T56:
