Blown 4L60E
Blown 4L60E
MY tranny died yesterday on an onramp to the freeway. It hit the 1-2 shift, and then boom. Almost the same instant as the shift there was a loud boom followed by the RPM's flying up. I let off the gas, and coasted for a second then gave it some gas, the car accelerated OK but the RPM's were still high. I pulled onto the sholder and stopped. When I tried to accelerate again the engine would rev but the car wouldn't move. Reverse doesnt work either. The car goes into park fine, but when put into gear it does nothing, I cant feel it go into gear. My first thought was the torque converter went out by the way it was acting, but who knows.
I had it towed to a tranny shop by my house, the guy who ownes it is a friend of my dads, and was my Little leauge baseball coach a long time ago. He said he woud do a stock rebuild for cost or I could bring in a new tranny for him to install, if infact the tranny is bad and not the Tq converter.
So the question is, where can I get a built 4L60E capibable of holding 400rwtq. I dont have that much now, but a built tranny will hold the Hp and Tq I am making now over a stock rebuild. Or should I give him a list of upgraded parts I want put in the rebuild tranny?
I hadn't have any problems up till this point, except for the tq converter not unlocking after long highway trips. After a min. or two it woud unlock, or if shut the car off then erstarted it.
Any opinions?
....I have a 97 Z28.

Over the years I remember a couple of occasions when a customer showed up with a broken car and a list of parts and proceedures they considered to be what was best for the repairs. If the customer was firm in there decision and not open to suggestions for an alternate proceedure if I felt like it would benefit them, I usually followed their instructions and installed their prefered parts and followed any special instructions given. In some of those situations, the repairs did not solve the original problem, or at least not completely, and the customer was not satisfied and looking for a reason to place the blame on me. I was not responsible for the results since I followed instructions to the "T'. The car belonged to them and they specified what they wanted done and they were the one responsible for paying the repair bill. JMO
Just thinking out loud here and probably being a little too picky. Sorry.

I second calling Frank @ CPT I am extreemly happy with my tranny it's been in there for over 2 years or so. I am only pushing a little over 300 rwhp right now, but I know guys runnig CPT trannies for 3+ years both on the street and at the track with well over 450rwhp and 500rwtq...
Like Mike stated above however you don't always get what you are expecting by just handing over parts to someone who knows how to put them in. I know I watched Frank build mine and there were many things he did that were not just replacing parts. He actually mic'ed every clutch and steel to make sure clearance was perfect, I actually saw him send a few back that were either too small or too big (sorry can't remeber it's been a while), but appartnely if they say it is .xxx thickness, the standard is to be +/- .003. Frank also modified many things in there that were not replaced. He explains some of it in the sticky at the top of this section...

Re: Blown 4L60E
OK here’s the deal. Got a call from the tranny shop and everything inside the casing is trashed, including the case its self. He said it looks like the planetary gears came apart and all hell broke loose, cracked the case, valve body was mauled up, nothing is reusable. The price went from $1,100 for parts at cost and labor, to $1,900 if they provide a core.
So I have different options now.
Find and buy a rebuild able core, take it to the shop and they do a stock rebuild and warranty it for 1year/12K miles.
Call Frank at CPT, and either ship him a rebuild able core, OR see if he can get his hands on a core, do a race rebuild on it, and ship it to me. Of course I would pay for the core and shipping.
Find a reputable rebuilder of strong 4L60E's that can ship me a built tranny without me supplying a core.

Re: Blown 4L60E
Call Frank, I'm not sure if he still has them, but I know a few months ago he had a few different cores at his shop. Honestly, I think there was a post from him not too long ago stating what he charges for a core. I will search for it and see...

I might be misquoting him here but this is his responce to that type of question.
But please call him for verification, and don't go off of what I found here I could be missunderstanding what he is refering to the case as...

Re: Blown 4L60E
Sorry. I got your messege earlier, but never had a chance to call you back. Unfortunately, we don't have an '97 cores at this time. When we do run across them, people seem to want too much money for them. If you can come up with a core, we can certainly build what you need for your car. A '95-'97 transmission will work in your year.
