Question best way to align clutch assy?

i am putting my engine back in the car and the clutch is relatively new so i didn't replace it. I am looking for the best way to ensure everything is aligned without a tool as they come with a new clutch only? thanks any other tips for bolting my motor back to the trans while the trans is in the car is appreciated. this is a 96 6 speed ws6

I have a 97ss 383-D1 M6. Installed 3 clutches so far. I always had trouble aligning the trans input shaft, clutch spline, and dowels on the bell. I move the trans on a wood fixtured block with a rolling floor jack. Engage the best I can, but usually does not engage due to small misalignment. Then, hook up the hyd clutch actuator and fork (loose or finger tight), and, push on the clutch pedal by hand (not full stroke). This allows the clutch disk spline to center on the trans input shaft by releasing plate pressure. Also, it moves the trans forward. Works every time for me and is fast ensuring perfect alignment. Those plastic spline center tools never worked good for me on clutch disc alignment.
Hope this helps. B.

i usually just use a 3/8 extension with like a 15 deep socket on it and line it up by eye

then just have you and a buddy pick up the trans and stick it in there

I'd like to hear a good way to do this too - last time I did it, I left a few bolts of the pressure plate loose then pulled the trans back out and retightened it. Alignment tool didnt do diddly cause it doesnt align the throwout with the input shaft sleeve - it just aligned the clutch and pilot bearing (sort-of). If I was going to do this often, I would make a dummy shaft that aligned everything back to the trans input shaft sleeve, then I bet it would work the first time. With older cars, the bellhousing was separate and I just used to have someone press the pedal and finish pushing the tranny in all the way when the clutch loosened - much harder to do anything like that with these.
