Re: Best converter?

I have to say the customer service I recieved from West Coast Converters was EXCELENT!!! I blew the Transmission a couple of months ago and had to send the torque converter (that I had for OVER a year) back to be cut and cleaned. I asked how much he was gonna charge me.........he siad pay the shipping ($28.00) and he'd take care of me. And I LOVE my converter, I'd get better 60 foot times but I can't get traction. It also only cost me $425. Money well spent IMO.

Here is what mine looked like after I got it back from being cut and cleaned.......

Re: Best converter?

My buddy Darkhorse is running his 3000rpm Midwest into the mid 11's with an otherwise stock 4L60E. He's pushing well over 440rwtq through it cuttting 1.6's, with bolt'ons, cam, and blower. A true budget racer. The pride and joy of Midwest.

But here is what I didnt like. When I bought a brand new midwest from a camaroz28.com member. Before I put it in I wanted to verify the stall speed, STR amoung other things with Midwest so I knew exactly what I was putting in, other than just what the seller said. I spent days trying to get ahold of the "right guy" who seemed to be the only person who could help me. The lady on the phone seemed very snotty. Once I got ahold of the TC guru there, he gave me little or no specific information about the converter. I gave him all the number on the box and all he could say is that it was for a 4L60E and would stall between 2600-4000rpm. Couldnt tell me the STR or exact diameter or anything. This showed me that if I ever had a problem with the converter once it was in, I'd spend days getting to someone who could help me and even when I do get ahold of "that guy" he doesnt even know what I have.

I'm looking seriously into Fuddle who is running one hell of a deal on converters in the Vendors section. They are helping this site and the LS1 guys seem to love them. $350 for a converter rated to 550 ft/lbs of TQ, $505 for one that will handle 900 ft/lbs. Antiballon plate for N2O and everything. I am planning on getting one soon and will let everyone know how it works.

I called today to speak with John at Fuddle and I was welcomed by a sweet sounding woman who had a nice tone with me and helped me out with what I needed to know. John wasnt there so she asked if he could call me tomorrow. Well I work from 1130am to 230pm, so I said sure if he can call before 1130am EST. Then I realized they are in Utah and said "oh thats right, thats probably too early for you guys" and she promptly stated "No way, I'll tell him he's going to make sure to call you before 1130am EST" This meant alot to me showing that she's going to take responsibility and make sure he called. Customer service I'd like to have wether I have a problem with a converter or not.

Re: Best converter?

We're a distributor for ProTorque. We've had great success with them. I'd have to rank the Vigilante second. We've seen way too many Yank failures to ever recommend them. They have many lock-up clutch failures. They work great...when they work. Some of our customers pull killer 60 ft. times with the Yank, but some have as little as 300 miles on a lock-up clutch.

If you want to check out ProTorque... http://www.protorque.com/index2.htm

Re: Best converter?

Does no one run Hughes converters? My engine builder swears by them. Since he has cars running 7's with them I'm inclined to believe him.

For 4l60e's I guess about 600 bucks is normal cost on one. So, not the highest but not the lowest.

Re: Best converter?

I like my Midwest, it's been good to me. When contacting Midwest you have to call and ask for Dennis, he owns the place and it's a smaller company so he's usually busy making converters. Sometimes he can sound kinda standoffish or whatever.

I hear that Andre at Edge is the man - my cousin Handyman runs an Edge in his Caprice and he likes it. Reasonable cost too.
