Best converter?

I was told that a TCI street fighter couldn't hold up to 450 RWHP.... I thought that was crazy, I was also told that a Coan converters are the best on the market. Any truth to this. This was from a local tranny shop.

Re: Best converter?

I like the Vigilante...I've had a lot of experience with them in various cars and I think they work great at the track and fantastic on the street. My current Vig is a 3600 that I've had for almost 10 years and had it freshened last year only because the trans needed a rebuild and I figured that after 9 years of driving/racing that it should be gone thru... I got 5 solid tenths over my 11" LPE and its great for the street. Everyone who has driven the car and even dyno operators love the way my car "hits" out of the hole. Check them out at www.converter.com They are not cheap...around $700, but they have an UNCONDITIONAL 2 year warranty and a free stall upgrade, and I've never seen/used a converter like it. I have driven cars with the TCI 3500 Super Street Fighter and there is simply no comparison....

Yank...i dont do pink parts. that's not really the reason. These converters never stall to what they say.

Re: Best converter?

The reason I asked this question is: My friend has a 400-450 rwhp LS1, A4.
Well he had a coan converter installed. He blew the tranny, got that repaired. Then the coan stall blew up, with not even 300 miles onit. So Suggested a TCI since he couldn't afford the Yank or VIG. He had that in From about 100 miles and the tranny went again. He took the tranny to "performance tranny Shop" and they told him the TCI would never hold up to the power the motor was pushing. They said to get a Coan again.

Re: Best converter?

You must rebuild ANY converter after the tranny goes. It gets contaminated and will fail. The fault was ignorance, not the converter.

Re: Best converter?

Rich is right.

Anytime one failes (trans or converter) it's best to get BOTH redone. What probably happened, was tranny failed and sent junk into converter. New trans went in, but the converter failed and sent junk back to trans, the converter was replaced and the trans had all that junk from the previous "blow-ups" and died a short time later. Also be sure to FLUSH those cooler(s) and lines, as they might be holding some crap from the previous episodes. You can get canned trans-flush at transmission shops I think.

As for converter choices, Edge Racing seems to build a good converter. I'm happy with mine so far.

And Fuddle Racing seems to have a good rep with the LS1 guys on LS1Tech.com.

Both are less expensive options. In the $400-$600 range depending on converter setup.

Pro-Built Automatics sells the Vigilante and Edge converters, so he trusts them.

Re: Best converter?

Edge is hands down the best budget converter on the market. Best tech support I have ever dealt with either.

Re: Best converter?

Being in the transmission business for over 27 years, & having dealt with many torque converter companies, the Vigilante has had a very good reputation from the start, Yank & Pro Torque have done pretty well too, and now Edge has been doing very well for the last couple of years. Fuddle is new, and I like to see how they do for a couple of years (how they handle comebacks, complaints, warranties, etc.), before I recommend them. As for B&M, I have nothing good to say, as for TCI & Art Carr........

Well I dont know much about Art Carr, but my buddy has been through 9-10 of his Art Carr trannys with Vigilante Converter. The Converter never blew but just about everything else that could go wrong has. 9-10 in a season, he runs a few bolt on's, Edelbrock headers, borla catback, K&N CAI, 1.6 Rockers, 4.10's in a 12 bolt, and a Nitrous Works 150 shot. I thought that was insane, though they replaced it everytime it was a major hassle just to see low 12's. Considering I know folks around here running mid 11's with stock 4L60E's with converters.
