Bellhousing question

Will any other transmissions bolt up and work with the stock bellhousing and clutch? It is a 94 Z28 6 speed. I was wondering if a TKO500/600 would bolt up.

The story behind this is that my buddy bought a 97 TA 6 speed with 120k miles that was wrecked for $800. The guy told him that the transmission had just been rebuilt. He bought it to use as a donor to swap out is failing A4. We get the M6 in and go to drive it and it wouldn't shift into 3rd or 4th. The transmission was still under warranty from aamco so they said they would look at it. It turns out that the only thing the kid had them do was put 5th and 6th gear synchros in it. The transmission guy said that every gear in the trans is missing one or more teeth. All of the synchros are on there way out (except 5 and 6). It needs new bearings, a cluster kit, input shaft, etc.

They quoted him $1500 + labor. Im sure it will be well over $2000. I was just trying to help him think of a cheaper alternative since he got screwed so bad.

Thanks,
Joey

Look here for cheaper:

D&D Performance - http://www.ddperformance.com/
Six Speeds Inc - http://0174de9.netsolstores.com/

I wouldn't swap the T56 for another manual, its an awesome tranny. Plus you won't have to fab anything special.

Well, I showed him DD performance and we added up all of the parts he would need and it was $1500 too.

Im just so mad at that guy that screwed him over. I couldnt ever do that to somebody. I mean, we live about 30 minutes from Billy Grahams camaro so he could have had a compete T56 swap kit for $2k. Now he has a junk TA body, a junk trans, and we havent gotten anywhere.

Yea, that really sucks man. But I would still call those guys and talk to them. I personally got my tranny from Six Speeds Inc, and they do good work. The thing with these places is you will have a better than stock tranny, with a warranty.

My brother has pretty much the same problem with his tranny in his 99 WS6, has trouble shifting into 3rd and 4th. What happens usually is the shift fork gets bent. But most of these rebuild packages come with a stronger fork. And if you were to look at getting a TKO500 or 600, you're still lookin at some bucks. I know it sucks, but best to learn from mistakes (trusting local mechanics) and get the car fixed, then go back to having fun .

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't. You can call Tremec to be sure, but I think the TKO has the older Chevy bolt pattern, like the Muncie tranny. And I don't even know how the clutch would have to be done, probably a custom setup or one like a SBC, with a push-type clutch. Like I said, it would be a whole lot easier and probably cheaper to get the T56 rebuilt (unless you're already sitting on a TKO with nowhere to put it).

Heck, you could even try a local shop. Some are pretty good, just make sure you get a written estimate with all parts on it, and try to get a warranty.

I gotcha. I didnt realize that it would a custom clutch and all that crap. Im almost 100% that he is going to go back with the T56.

I wish we were rich, then I could talk him into a Lenco ST1200 4 speed.

Heck if I was rich, I'd have a 69 Camaro SS with a 396 small block and a Muncie M22 tranny . But good luck to ya with that tranny man.
