Question Banging in rearend when not under torque

More than a month has passed and still haven't found the source. It's not the outer bearings (i replaced them).

- happens MOSTLY when i take it out of gear or push the clutch (while moving), much less frequently and lower intensity when actually under load.
- has a cyclic car-speed-related metallic banging
- can be felt sometimes in the floorboards
- propagates all the way to the rims too

--> the car has the original torsen locker, relatively worn ring (as the result of poor installation once), a new axle on the right side and the original one on the left.

SO: Can it be the torsen, the ring and/or pinion, difference in axle teeth wear, driveshaft, carrier bearings (inside axle bearings)?

Have you checked the U-joints?

Hmm you got me there :P

What do you mean check, what should i be looking for? There's one from the transmission and one at the end to the pinion right?

Ok i lifted it and moved the driveshaft, at the rearend it's stiff, only rotating movement on the ring (which has some wear).

BUT in front, at the transmission, it has a lot of up-down play (about 1cm at the front u-joint where i was pushing). And it bangs too when i do this. And it doesn't feel like the U-joint has any play, it comes out of the transmission! The shaft coming out of it is the one.

Do you think this is the reason? It's possible that it propagates rearward and i hear it from behind, but the source is actually at the transmission...

If this is the problem, how serious is it? Is it dangerous? How can i fix it? How hard is it to replace the bearing/s there?

Thanks!!!!!!!

Are you saying the driveshaft slip-yoke is loose in the tranny tailshaft housing?

Yeah pretty much

I know it's suppose to go in and out, but it's pretty clearly going up and down too...

i would pull the housing off and change the bushing, rear seal, and slip yoke. not difficult to do at all. probably easier to knock the seal off the tail w/the tail still bolted to the trans. local tranny shop might be able to hook you up w/trans. parts. dealer for slip yoke.

Damn this car lol... After even more going around having people give their opinion, now I'm inclined to believe the sounds may be coming from the play in the ring&pinion... It is rather large...

Maybe when it's not under load, if the car hits a bump or something the driveshaft looses contact with the ring and when it hits back it starts bouncing and hitting the ring, doing the sound I'm hearing.

Argh

If this doesn't fix it I'll go hunting for the trans...
