Bad Slave or Bad Clutch or ??
Bad Slave or Bad Clutch or ??
I am running the McLeod Street Twin with steel flywheel and the McLeod master cylinder. A few days ago, the clutch pedal started feeling like it was engaging and disengaging at different heights. Now, sometimes it doesn't engage at all and I have to keep pressing it and messing with it to get the car in gear. The clutch isn't slipping and doesn't smell or make noise. It only has 12k miles on it and no strip passes. I jacked the car up and had my wife shift and run through the gears a few times while I listened and watched. No odd noises and she said it only gave her problems intermittently. There are no fluid leaks and the reservoir is full. Are there any other checks I can do before I start replacing stuff or pull the clutch for inspection? Thanks for all the help.

Thanks for the reply. Did you replace both the slave and master...or just the slave? I hate to replace the Master because it is made by McLeod and costs $300. The slave is stock.
Re: Bad Slave or Bad Clutch or ??
Bleeding isn't the issue. I have been driving it for 12,000 miles. I installed the clutch and bled the system over a year ago. Just started having issues a week ago.

Re: Bad Slave or Bad Clutch or ??
Air can always develop back into the line, it's a good place to check. When I installed my clutch 8 months ago I bled the system several times... and got all the air out. Just last week I brought a new clutch and when I pulled out the Slave cylinder it was evident there was air in the lines. If you haven't done so yet... just pull the slave cylinder out and check the resistance on the rod when you push it in. And even so if there is no air in the lines, it can be a component on the hydraulic system is malfunctioning... that's just a good place to start... other wise your only other bet is to drop the tranny and check the condition of your Clutch fork and Trow out bearing.

From my local parts store I was able to buy a brand new slave cylinder for $72. As stated above, disconnect your slave and check it for leaking. Don't fully press on the clutch pedal with the slave removed or you'll damage it. Also check that the clutch fork pivot point is fully bolted down. Try checking the "play" on the fork with the slave cylinder removed. Several of us have had the bolt that holds the pivot point in place back out over time. If this is your problem, you'll have to pull the tranny to fix it. I applied loctite to the bolt.
