4L60E Shifting Troubles...
4L60E Shifting Troubles...
Hey guys,
It seems that my transmission is starting to act up and I'm trying to determine what course of action I should take to fix it. The car has about 82,000 on the clock and has had a somewhat rough life.
Anyways, what's been happening is that when the tranny shifts from 1-2 it always seems to shift at the right time, but going from 2-3 in normal driving, the tranny doesn't shift until 500-1000 rpms after what it should, and it never feels like it's shifting correctly (some hesitation). Also, the other day, when I decided to really get on it in first gear, It revved up to ~ 5800 and it didn't want to shift for me, the rpms just stayed at the constant 5800 in first until I let off the gas, then it shifted into second and then into third.
What does this sound like to you guys??? Time for a rebuild? Time for a flush?
TIA for the ideas,
Ryan

Re: 4L60E Shifting Troubles...
Sounds like the tranny is on its way out.
Could be the fluid level but if this has been going on sometime than the clutches are pretty much toasted.

Should I just do a basic rebuild or get something built stronger?
TIA

Yup...It sounds like your transmission is on it's way out. Sounds like your 2-4 band and 3-4 clutches are cooked. They're not able to hold at higher RPM's. These are both weak points in stock 60E's. Fortunately we know what changes/modifications/updates to do to prevent it from happening again.

for one of your race tranny rebuilds, in terms of shipping. Is there a crate service that you recomend? Thanks for whatever info you have,
Ryan
Re: 4L60E Shifting Troubles...
$1350? We only charge $1000 for race rebuilds. Are you looking into options off our site? I would really only recommend the 4L65E front support option.
As for shipping, we use regular UPS, as they will carry anything under 150#. Most of the transmissions that are sent to us are just drained and shrink wrapped. Crating, or palletising it puts it over the 150# limit. I know it costs around $75 to ship a trans to us (In Maryland) from California, and right around $60 to ship one to us from Florida.
Please be advised to NOT use Fed-Ex to ship these things. We got one with a broken case last week that looks like they dropped it off their truck. We haven't had any problems with UPS.

Re: 4L60E Shifting Troubles...
Fed-Ex is giving the customers a big hassle about his transmission. It's still not certain if they're going to pay for the broken case. This particular customer shipped Fed-Ex, instead of UPS because it was $20 cheaper. Now it looks like it may cost him an extra $125 for a case.

Re: 4L60E Shifting Troubles...
Frank,
What kind of turnaround time are you looking at right now on your race rebuilds?
I was thinking about adding the 4L65E hardened output shaft and 4L65E needle bearing front support/sun shell. Which actually only comes to $1250, so don't ask where the $1350 came from
