B&M Hammer
B&M Hammer
Hello, I noticed by doing searches on here a few weeks back that alot of people were wondering about installing aftermarket shifters in there A4 cars equipped with a 4l60e. I decided to do it and to be honest it wasent that hard. Once you fabricate a plate to mount the new shifter on and figure out the NSS switch & reverse lights switch. Thats the worst part. I went with the B&M hammer shifter and just got a upper console from a Manuel Firebird. I also have a Trans Go Full Manuel Shift kit, but the shifter will work either way. So for everyone who is contimplating doing this, It isnt that Hard.
Well the first thing I did was rebuild my transmission into a full manual 4l60.
Then i removed the console and removed the stock shifter and I also removed 2 of the 3 linkages in there. Then I cut a square piece of steel and mounted it where the stock shifter was. Once that was done i figured out where the new shifter needed to be mounted. It has to be closer to the front of the car. It will not work in the stock location. Once you get the shifter mounted to the steel plate then comes the wiring. The B&M hammer comes with 2 switches. One for NSS & the other for Reverse lights. The stock harness you unplug from the stock shifter contains the wires you need to hook up to the 2 new switches. I cant remember the colors right off the top of my head but its pretty easy. Im pretty sure theres info on here about it. Once all that is done then your work is on the upper console to make everything look good. I was going to use a manual 6 upper console but i couldnt find a shift boot mounting ring anywhere. So while i was looking at my upper console i had a idea. I removed the gear indicator from the underside and then I removed the divider that goes between the indicator and the stock shifter. I then put it back on a it fit perfect over the new shifter and then i just bought a leather shift put and put it on. It looks factory & i havent had any issues with the shifter as well, but like I said at the start i have a full manual transmission, mine doesnt shift on its own.
This really isnt that hard, once you get the shift plate fabricated and mounted it pretty easy. If I would have to do it again i would say 3 to 4 hours of work if that. Hope this helps you
