Axle switched?

I recently found my gears have been switched from stock 3.43's to 2.73's in my 97 Trans Am. I have no idea why the person before me went with higher gears, but i will soon have to remedy that. Anyways i am not sure wether the actual gears have been switched or the whole axle. Do you know where the serial numbers would be on the axle so i can see if it is the original axle. I think im going to go to a 3.73 gears how much of a task is it to get just the gears in?? Is it a LOT easier to change out the whole axle?

Is your car a M6? Don't know why someone would put 2.73's in it. If you've confirmed it has 2.73's they probably changed the entire rear since the carriers are different - you'll need to know which carrier you have before ordering 3.73's.

I would be looking for possible bad wreck damage that could have caused a bent axle

Hope this isn't the case though
