Axle shaft removal

What is the yellow spring like structure in the center? I haven't seen it before and i'm not quite sure what to do with it. Could someone list the complete steps for removing the axles from where i currently am in the process?

Thanks.

I have never read of these springs being in the way. What do i have to do in order to access the c-clips? I would like to finish this tomorrow and i really need to know how to get to the c-clips.

Re: Axle shaft removal

Remove this shaft and you will be able to access the c-clips through the openings in the differential case. You will have to push the axles inward to release the clips. I use a telescoping magnet to keep the clips from going anywhere.

well I replaced the bearings and seals just to find out that the old ones were fine. The problem is the pinion bearing, which the shop failed to tell me. they said "bearings in rear are shot". what can I even do know? they want $800-$1300.

Re: Axle shaft removal

That's ridiculous. A gear install kit with new bearings is $100. A complete gear install labor is $350 max. Should be a little less for just the bearings.

I agree with it being ridiculous. They told me that "the rear must be completely disassembled to access the pinion bearing and then after that the gears must be reinstalled.

I really don't know the process, but at $50-$100 an hour, I feel like they'd be taking wayyyy too much time .... carefree if you ask me.

Re: Axle shaft removal

You would pull the bearing caps, and lift out the carrier with the ring gear still assembled, then have access to the pinion for bearing replacement.

so what should I look for as for a reasonable price? I would say I'd take on this project myself but the differential makes me nervous. Replacing the wheel bearings has me beat!

well I have better news. I called a shop called "M & H Transmission" that claims to rebuild differentials. Over the phone, they told me that "we cannot just replace the pinion bearing, we must do all of the bearings and seals. The total would be between $500 and $600". I like that a lot better than $800-$1300 for ONLY the pinion bearing.

Re: Axle shaft removal

I didn't suggest that you replace ONLY the pinion bearing. I was simply explaining how easy it is to access the pinion bearing. A good install kit, as I already suggested, includes the pinion bearings and the carrier bearings. Once you have the carrier out you press the end bearings off the carrier, press the new bearings on.

oh i know you weren't suggesting that, I was just telling you that the shop quoted me for only the pinion bearing, nothing else.
