another what gears question...

I've search through all 12 pages of the Drivetrain section of the forum to try and find an answer .. But I can't find exactly what im loooking for... so.. i have a 96 A4 Z28 im pretty sure it has 2.73 gears on it, its all stock.. and i was looking to upgrade my gears.. Im not into alot of the drag racing and such, basically a daily driver but i want more speed from stop.. i heard that some can make really loud noises and cant make highway trips really annoying.. I'll be on the highway a decent amount of time as well and i dont want to be limited to going the speedlimit or 75 mph or less as ive seen some posts on here saying.. i was thinking of 3.42 or 3.73, and if anyone knows what RPMs it will be at at the higher speeds that will be great.. im just looking for dailiy driver with more get up and go and not sacrificing tons of mileage ... thanks in advance..

Re: another what gears question...

You can figure this out for yourself. Your tranny has the following ratios.

3.069
1.625
1.000
0.696

Download or use an on-line gear ratio calculator, the above ratios combined with your tire size will allow you to see the differences in rpm with various rear end gears. For example, with a 26" tall tire and 2.73's, 75mph = 1,860rpm. With 3.42's the revs bump up to 2,330rpm, and so on.
