Advice for a slipping trans?
Advice for a slipping trans?
After it warms up, my trans slips badly when I give it 3/4 to full throttle. I know the 1-2 shift is bad, but I haven't really been on it to see what the other shifts are like. It used to burn both tires when I got it a month or so ago, but now it barely leaves any rubber lines.
What should I check? I know to check the fluid level. I'll drop the pan this weekend (NO NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!) and look for metal. What else should I look for, and what fixes can I try? I really don't want to drop the money on a new trans and converter just now. Is there any way to re-use my current converter if I do have to get a new trans? If I put magnets in the pan and change the fluid a few times, would that be likely to get any metal or clutch material out of the converter so I could keep it?
What about those snake oil bottles that claim to condition the seals? Any other ideas? Thanks.

Re: Advice for a slipping trans?
If your transmission is cooked, there aren't any "cheap" fixes. Any additives you put in it will only serve to make it go completely out, quicker.
You'll know if it's burnt, by the fluid color/smell. Is it black, or brown? Does it smell burnt? You'll also see a film of black in the bottom of the pan, when you drop it.
There is no way to adequately flush your torque converter! Most builders will void your warranty if you choose to do so. The only way to clean a converter is to have it cut apart.

Re: Advice for a slipping trans?
I was afraid of this, that I couldn't reuse my converter. Well, when I need the tranny, I guess I'll make sure to get a good converter as well. Thanks for the help.
