Question A4 Shifter/Trans Problem

I have a 95' Formula 78,000 miles I bought 2 weeks ago.
The shifter button was difficult to depress I had to use the palm of my left hand and push hard. I went to take it over to get tags and I stopped for fuel.
It wouldn't shift above Nuetral. I drove home and had to use a lot of force to push it into park.
Now the button depresses and it feels loose and will not shift out of park.

Yes I have my foot on the brake.

Any ideas on what that may be and how I can fix it?

I am new to this sight and familiar with f-bodies. My previous car was a thirdgen.

Thanks!

Most likely the shifter cable broke. Its not that hard to replace, there is a thread right above this one in which another persons car is having similar problems. U ca get a shifter cable from a junk yard for less then $10 just make sure u get one from an 82-02 I beleive. Peace, Dustin.

Re: A4 Shifter/Trans Problem

I am taking my console apart to check it out. I just can't figure out how to get the top of the shifter off so that I can remove it.

How do you take that off? Thanks for your help!!!

Re: A4 Shifter/Trans Problem

Remove this clip (it's like a large staple) and pull the **** up to remove it.

If not a transmission shift cable problem, it might be the brake/transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid.
