94z28 wont shift out of 1st

I just recently put a different motor in my 94z. the 4l60e tranny i got from a friend has a newer speed sensor in it and i havent yet swapped it out. i assumed it just runs the speedometer correct? reason i ask is because this tranny wont shift into 2nd. its full of new fluid and new filter. i wasnt sure if not having the speed sensor hooked up is causing it not to shift. any ideas?

Re: 94z28 wont shift out of 1st

Incorrect.

The PCM shifts the tranny. It needs the input from the speed sensor. PCM also controls certain engine functions, like elevated idle RPM at speed to prevent stalling when the throttle suddenly closes, and to control the decel fuel cutoff. These need the VSS output. It should still shift though. The code for the sensor will cause it to shift soft into 3rd gear.

Put the sensor in, and make sure it's working. It will set a code if it isn't there. There are also numerous codes for the trans (which has to be from a 94, because they changed to pulse width modulated converter lockup in 95) and none of these codes turn on the SES light. Get it scanned.

You have the wrong transmission in the car. Aside from the speedo not working, you'll encounter lock up issues, and other various codes, as Injuneer explained.

well....i just realized the speed sensor i need wont work in this trans....so apparently its gotta come out and obviously isnt the same trans that was in this car. i never did get any codes with the speed sensor being unplugged. what year transmissions will work for my 94?

[QUOTE=teamstream;6927624 what year transmissions will work for my 94?[/QUOTE]

A '94 is a stand alone year. This means that the only year that will work is a 1994. 1993 was a 4L60 )700R4) and 1995 was a PWM 4L60E. Neither will work.

This tranny dosent have the PWM on the bellhousing like most ive seen so thats why i assumed this one was right....im gonna try changing the tailshaft the the proper speed sensor and see if that does anything.

Did your 94 harness connector fit correctly?

Re: 94z28 wont shift out of 1st

It won't have PWM on the bell housing. It will have it cast on the pump.

well i picked up a different tailshaft that has the correct speed sensor...im gonna try it and see if that makes any difference. and also this trans dosent have PWM stamped on the pump....they started that on the 95 and up 4l60e's right? my buddy has a trans from a 94 corvette that i was gonna install in the car but it had a PWM pump?

Does the tailshaft have the reluctor gear for the VSS installed on it.

No 1994 4L60Es were PWM. You also can't even put a PWM pump in a 1994 transmission. This means your buddys trans ISN'T a '94.

Re: 94z28 wont shift out of 1st

well, i pulled the transmission back out of my camaro....turns out its a 93..so it wont work. I picked up a trans thats suppose to come out of a 94 vette. it has pwm on the pump housing but according to my friends book 93 and 94 should NOT have a pwm pump. Its also missing the pwm shift cylenoid as well since its not suppose to have one...but theres a harness there meaning it maybe should of? any ideas?

Re: 94z28 wont shift out of 1st

At some point someone installed the wrong trans in that Vette. They put a PWM trans in and left the PWM solenoid out. We see people do this as a shortcut. The problem is, this will usually cause other failures on both the lock up clutch and the trans itself,

Re: 94z28 wont shift out of 1st

yea....evidently cause the trans fluid in it was NASTY. Anyway, i talked to some tranmission guys yesterday on the phone and they said a 93 4l60e will work in my 94. is this true?
