94 z28 auto trans problems

Did the camaro have trans problems from the factory?
I bought my son a 94 with only 47,000. original miles
and the trans went down in just 3 months with less than
1 thousand miles. No leaks, no noise, no rough shifting.
Now looking at 1900. to overhaul trans.

No it didnt have what could be called issue from the factory recalls anyway. There are however many improvemnts that can and should be done in the build process that can make it much stronger and perform much better than it did even when knew. AS for what its called 4L60E is the trans name.

When you say "it went down", what exactly happened to it? Maybe it's something simple to fix.

$1900??? We only charge $1400 for a rebuild that's capable of 9 second times. Our 4L60E rebuilds start at $700. Even if you lived across country, shipping would only total $200.

My son was driving the car, night before fourth of july, called and told me the car was smoking from the rear end, and under the hood was really hot. Smoke was coming from under the exhaust, and there was transmission fluid leaking from where he pulled into the parking lot. Thanks for all your help.

What should I ask the shop to do so I am not in this situation again.
Should I ask for cerartain upgrades over the stock parts as to give better
performance and longer lifespan. car is only driven on the street.

Have you jacked the car up, to see exactly where it's leaking? The 4L60E could leak from many places. Some are an easy repair. The worse case scenario is thast the "junk", teflon pump bushings GM put in these transmissions has walked out and causing a leak out the front.
This sounds like a pretty serious leak. Check the cooler lines, pan, case connector, servo, or even the case vent. If the transmission is overheating, or is overfilled, it will blow fluid out the case vent. Many times these leaks are misdiagnosed, because the case vent is located on the top of the transmission.

the leak was not comming from the trans pan but before
that. they took off a cover that exposed the torque converter
and said that a seal had moved causing the leak. It would
only leak when the engine was on i guess under preassure.
This happened all of a sudden no warning no leaks on garage
floor no noise, no rough shifting. Just started leaking while he was
driving. They have also said that pressure had been building up for
some time causing the seal to move, but may have starved other areas
of fluid. However we had no burning smell. I noticed you are in Elkton, Md.
I am in Bel Air, MD. If I could get the car away from the shop it is in now when
could you have it finished.
