After an electrical dead short that literally melted the shifter cable plastic case off and started a small carb fire, the trans wants to start in second gear and does not up shift or down shift properly.All cables have been replaced and properly adjusted.

Does this trans have internal electrical solenoids?

Any suggestions short of buying a new trans are greatly appreciated.

 

Are you referring to the TV cable melting? If you put a new one on, it sounds like it might be adjusted for too high of a pressure. Try this...When you come to a stop, put the transmission in neutral for a second and then put it back in drive. See if it starts in first gear then. if so, it's your TV Cable adjustment.

Aside from that, it could be the TV valve (in the valve body) sticking. The MTV Up valve, and TV regulator valves are also possibilities.

Other possibilities include the governor. Does it have 1st gear if you select it manually?
