6-speed throwing out of 1st

Okay, my buddy just bought a '98 Camaro z-28 with the M-6 tranny. He's since come up with a problem.

When he tries to burn out the tranny will physically FORCE the shifter(and of course the tranny itself) out into neutral. The problem ONLY happens when he gives it too much gas when dropping the clutch into first. If he slows down to 5-10 mph and hammers it, it doesn't have this problem. Also, if he holds the shifter in first the gear will simply grind.

I don't know what to tell the guy except that either A) his linkage is screwed or B) his tranny is screwed. I, personally, think the later.

What do you guys think?

If it has an aftermarket shifter, it could be out of adjustment. I adjusted mine too close, and it kept poping out of reverse. By the time I readjusted the shifter, it was too late and the tranny does it by itself. I now have it out of the car, and will be fixing it. Probably a syncro or something.

Sounds like the teeth on the synchronizer sleeve are worn. That'd be my first guess at least. To be certain though you really have to open the tranny up and take a look since it could be any number of issues.

Sounds like syncro teeth are worn. The only real way to find out is take it apart.
