4L60E question
4L60E question
I read this article about a Chevy fullsize getting a K&N intake, exhuast and a jet chip. At the end they say "In fact we drove it over 93 mph, turning only 2,500 rpms in overdrive. The truck was turning 3,200 at the same speed before the upgrade." I then emailed the editor and asked him "How is that even possible with out changing the gear ratios? It wouldn't matter if that truck made 1,000 horsepower it would still turn 2,500rpms at 93mph in
overdrive. " Here is his response, what do you guys think?
Joe, thanks for your letter. Let me say that that you have asked a very good question and are definitely paying attention. IN this case the 1996 Chevy is equipped with a 4L60 E transmission, it is the first year of what's called a Pulse Width Modulated Torque Converter. Unlike in a 95 this torque converter takes into account MAP signal, ignition timing and much more, applying only the needed percentage of converter application to the transmission, improving performance. With the new upgrades the engine is working more efficiently, in this case improving the tachometer to speedometer ratio. I also want you to know that I completed this upgrade personally and found it to be the best combination upgrade I had done in quite some time.

Lol, I haven't replied here in a while...but I guess I can chime in. I think he messed with the Torque converter lock up in the computer. That's about as far into explaining it as I wanna go. I'm not 100% sure how that works so I am going to leave it up to the big guys....
