my REVERSE is F'd up!!

I need some helpy here. Someone please!

When I shift into 'reverse' it just pops right back out. I have to shift into it really hard for it to stick. If it doesn't go in right it makes this weird *** noise and pops right out of gear. It takes like 5 or 6 tries before I can get it to stick. Is this the transmission or the shifter or what??? Any suggestions, solutions, or donations maybe. My warranty is gone. Every other gear is fine.

If the description didn't make too much sense..then sorry. I can try and explain it better maybe.

My guess would be something with the clutch not releasing all the way causing it to be difficult to engage. Since there are no syncro's in reverse but there are in every other gear it would be the only one it's noticable in if the clutch is barely dragging just enough to spin the input shaft.

Try letting out the clutch very slowly while pushing it into reverse. My car does this everytime when its cold. Mine will not go into reverse unless you let the clutch out a little. I"ve heard others say theirs is like that too, so try that.

I never have problems with mine, but if you are using an aftermarket shifter it might be set incorrectly, I would check into that and like the others said that it might be the clutch. How many miles do you have on that clutch?

I've tried letting the clutch out as slowly as possible and still nothing different. Sometimes I cant even get it into reverse gear at all. That noise it makes is horrible though. I feel like Im torturing my girl.

I have 26,256 miles on the clutch right now.

Try putting it in 1st gear then reverse. You don't have to drive anywere in 1rst, just put it in then back it out. It should help.

I would say the pressure plate. maybe even the pilot bearing but now that i am trying to think i am not sure of the bearing will do anything liek that.

Yea, exactly.

After a couple friends "buzzed" Reverse in my car while going for 5th, I noticed that I had wiped out the synchro ring. Apparently, it doesn't take many failed attempts to wear it out, which makes it more difficult to engage the gear, which makes it more likely to grind, and then the cycle just repeats itself. If things get worse, you may need to go in the tranny, after making your that your clutch is releasing properly. Fortunately, you only have to pull the tailshaft housing, and fixing the synchro ring is as easy as pulling it off, flipping it over, and reassembling the trans (the ring has teeth on each side, but only one side is used on that particular ring).

it's a good idea not to, it's harder to put into reverse that way and prevents you from blowing out the reverse syncro due to a bad lockout solenoid!!

to the original question, it's probably the syncro giving out. the reverse syncro can be flipped around to use the other side, you only have to pull off the tail of the housing and your spedo gear and stuff, if you can rebuild a motor you probably can flip the syncro, if your not that experienced have someone else do it.

Nope - there's little room for it in the B-bodies, so I didn't install it. I've got no problem finding 5th, but I now test guest drivers just to skip it and go into 6th.

either not having it fully engaged when you let out the clutch or the lockout solenoid failing and you hit reverse looking for 5th.

I've had this problem ever since getting a new clutch, it's not a real bad thing.....apparently, like everyone says, the syncro, I go into first then reverse and it lessens the impact and makes it easier and a one time thing......so I don't have to "try" 2 or 3 times, I've become accustomed to this and then jamming it in reverse to the point where I can feel it lock in there.
