4l60e or700r4?

Guys,
I was told i might have a 700r4 in my 93 T/A, how would I be able to tell if it's a 700r4 or 4l60e?

Actually it's a 4L60, the last version of the 700r4. It should have the kick-down cable attached to the throttle body. It is not electronically controlled.

You can't "upgrade" to a 4L60E in a 93. The "E" means its electronically controlled by the PCM. Your 93 doesn't have a PCM that can control an electronic tranny. That's why your trans is called the 4L60 (no "E"). The 94 PCM was revised to control the tranny, and the A4 was changed to the 4L60E (with the "E").

I'll move this to "Drivetrain"......

So is the 4l60 just as good? And is it a good candidate to rebuild, or should i junk it and go with a t56 swap? I know this is preference but I can't decide which way to go.

They are all basically the same tranny, physically - 700R4, 4L60 and 4L60E. The "E" is different only because of the electronic shift controls.

In case it isn't clear - the 700R4 would not be an "upgrade" from a 4L60 or 4L60E. I wonder where this myth got started? It is basically the same tranny. Any of the three can be upgraded to handle pretty good power. As far as T56 v. any of the automatics mentioned, it comes down to whether you like to shift or not. A stock T56 will take more abuse than a stock 4L60, but it is not a racing transmission. It doesn't like to be power shifted and it does not hold up well to hard launches on sticky tires, especially on a prepped surface. Of course, it can be upgraded to handle just about anything you can throw at it, but be prepared for sticker shock if you decide to go that route. If your car is basically stock, it comes downs to liking to shift or not. A stock level T56 or 4L60 will hold up well for street use with a basically stock car.
