4l60E lose forward but not reverse?

Is it common for a 4l60e to lose all forward gears but reverse still feels great? Didnt get on it real hard while sitting still, but as it was running, when I put the car in each gear, nothing happened, the car didnt lurch forward or anything. When I went into reverse, you could tell that it was in it.

Im trying to get more details from the owner to see what it was actually doing, but I was thinking that second gear would be the first to go.

Any ideas? shift computer? full rebuild?

Early 4L60E's are notorious for the forward pistons cracking. This will cause a no forward condition. Did it ever slip in forward before it went completely? The crack prone aluminum pistons are the reason we update them to the steel pistons in our "Pro Race" units, and offer them as an option on our other builds.

will find out soon enough. Im not sure what happened exactly. All I know is that it only had reverse and that the fluid was black. Pulled it saturday. Took it to a guy to rebuild. The guy I bought the car from had a rebuild kit in it. But I doubt it had pistons in it. Can you order the piston upgrade seperately from you?

turns out the pump is bad, some busted up gears, and yes the clutch piston is broke.

Looks like I will be looking for a used trans to put back in. Not worth rebuilding this one.
