4l60e install question
Hey everyone, I'm near the end of my engine build. Just gotta hook trans back up.
Ok so I've never done an auto before. Only installed manuals. I worked on it for 3hours trying to get it on but I could never get it to mate fully. I but a few bolts in and only tightened them a little. Not all the way because I know your not suppose to draw it in closer like that. So I wiggled it a whole bunch and pushed it it trying to get it in, but no go.
I gave up and read later that night there are suppose to be 3 clicks when putting the converter on and I'm pretty sure I only heard 2. So I'm assuming that was my problem. And I also learned that you have to take measurements also.
I understand now how to install it (sort of) but... I'm worried and wondering if I could have possibly damaged the pump on the front.
Is there a way to tell? Or do y'all think I'm ok since I never tightened it down all the way or turned the engine on. (our of car lol)

Re: 4l60e install question
There are two clicks, as you call them, when installing the torque converter. If you've noticed, the neck (I suppose that's a good term for it) on the converter has notches on it that line up with the 2 ears(?) in the tranny. They're alongside the shaft, that can be seen inside the seal. I lined the notches up as I slid the converter onto the shaft and pushed it on as far as it would go. I then turned it clockwise as I gently applied pressure to push it on the rest of the way, and felt it seat fully. The 4L60e I pulled out of my '94Z28 is still on my garage floor if ya need me to take the measurement you want cuz it's torque converter hasn't been removed. I also have the factory service manuals on my car I can refer to as well. I hope this info. isn't too little too late for ya.

Thanks. I think I posted this in the wrong forum. But I installed it like you said and measured everything and it came out fine. I just wanted to make sure I didn't damage my pump trying to force it on at first. But I was told it was fine and I have it in the car and it drives fine.
Re: 4l60e install question
If you're using a stock diameter (12") converter, you shouldn't be able to get your fingers between it and the transmission, when it's all the way in. This is when you're looking at it from the bottom. The converter should also spin free until you bolt it up to the flexplate.
