410's in auto with ls1 power

How bad are 410's on the highway. Will a honda be able to pull up to me and blow my dorrs of because i have no top end power?

Since when will you have no top end power? You won't be in your powerband as long as you would with higher gears, but that wouldn't make you lose to a Honda

Do you currently have 2.73's? If you want to know what it'll be like on the highway with 4.10's, drive in 3rd gear. The RPM's are "almost" exactly what they are w/4.10's in 4th gear.

I know what your concern is. I had 3.73's in my car a couple years ago, and I got smoked by a Cobra on the highway from an ~80 mph roll. Problem was, when I punched it from that speed, the converter would un-lock, but the tranny wouldn't downshift to 3rd.

What I learned since with my car, and after putting the 4.10's in last summer (2004) is that you have to MANUALLY DOWNSHIFT above certain speeds, otherwise the tranny won't on its own, and you're stuck in the gear you're in.

FWIW, I raced my buddy's '97 Z28 M6 (all stock, but he ran 13.7 @ 100 in the 1/4 mile) on the highway, from a ~75 - 80 mph roll, and absolutely walked away from him. He knows how to drive and which gear to pick too, not like losing was his fault.

You can see in my sig the difference the gears made at the track for me. BUT, if you want a highway "rocket" but with better acceleration off the line, maybe stick with the 2.73's but get a converter. I'm planning on getting one even with the 4.10's (the car STILL bogs off the line! ).

EDIT: if you lose to a Honda on the highway, you suck! I've raced a couple quick ones, and they're never very competitive above ~120 mph. You can always pace them at ~3/4 throttle, then put it to the floor and take off on them ... fun stuff!

Well lets say I have 410's and a ls1 that has 273 or 323 comes up to me and we go from a 65 or 70 roll is he going to eat me?

I'm not sure where the "sweet spots" are w/3.23's, but around ~70 mph is always a great spot with 2.73's, but it's also good with 4.10's as long as you downshift to 3rd. If you're running an LT1 against an LS1 though, I don't think gears will save you. Like I said, I ran my buddy's LT1 M6 from ~75 - 80 and walked away. M6's rob less power to turn, my A4 robs more power, yet I still had him. I guarantee you the results would have looked identical even if I had 2.73's (at that speed, the tranny drops to 2nd gear!).

IMO, tall gears are overrated. Obviously 2.73's and such are going to put a hurt on the fun you're going to have, but 4.10's are a bit over the top. again IMO, the only time you need 4.10s with an auto is if you have a dedicated track car. 3.73's seem to be a good auto gear for something with good mods. 3.42's even pull like mad on cars with good mods. Unless you setup really really needs 4.10's, why bother with the loss of gas mileage and top end pull?
