Re: 4:10 brands?

I've got a set of Richmond 4.10's for my Z28 and they've held up thus far. They're also much quieter (much, much quieter in fact) than the set of Richmond 3.73's I previously had. From my experience, friends', and reading on here, it seems real hit & miss with Richmond and other brands for whining gears. Strange and Motive are a couple other common brands for gears for our cars.

Re: 4:10 brands?

Typically the Richmonds are noisy, but they are very robust.
The motives are not real bad if installed right, the ones I put in were still kind of noisy.
The OEM type like GM or Yukon are two cut gears with .003 backlash and if set up right are quiet. These are the types of gears in factory GM rearends.
I put the Yukons that are identical i'm told to GM in mine and I can barely hear them plus they have an anything goes warranty and Randys, you bust them they replace them.

I think most people agree that it is near impossible to install 4.10's in a GM 10 bolt and have it dead silent. A lot of it will depend on the install precision and attention to deatil and spec.

You DO KNOW what a spool is, right?? I've got my doubts, because if you're getting a spool, that tells me you're SERIOUS about RACING your car, and if you're SERIOUS about RACING, then you shouldn't be wasting your time putting gears into the factory 10-bolt .

Likely an Eaton POSI is what you're looking for?

AFAIK, the SS's and WS6's always got the Auburn units, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong! I know that in the later years (ie: '02) the Torsen was standard, but the Auburn was offered with the SS package.

As far as which one is best for a 6-speed? Well, technically "neither one" if it's just a 10-bolt!!

The Auburns can wear out, while a Torsen will either work or it won't (which means it's broken! ) since they have a whole pile of worm gears and such inside them. The Auburns work on hydraulic and spring pressure.

Re: 4:10 brands?

I prefer the Auburn, but that's just me. Like I said, they were only offered with the SS "performance package" in '02, so that makes me think they're better too. The work more like a traditional (clutch pack) posi. The Torsens are ok I guess? More clunking from it though.
