3.73 gears or 4.10 ?? thats the question
3.73 gears or 4.10 ?? thats the question
Hey friends, I finally found someone to do a gear swap, so before I order the gears I wanted to get an idea if anyone who has 4.10's regrets the loss of power on the top end. Is the loss of power that much. I personally place more value on bottom end acceleration and power, but not sure if it will be very noticeable thru the mid range and top end. So tell me fellows is it the 3.73's or the 4.10's ?
Re: 3.73 gears or 4.10 ?? thats the question
Depends, auto or 6 speed. Auto def no more than 3.73 and if you do 4.10's on an auto you'll burn it up. 6-speed go with 4.10's, and with the 6th gear you'll still have streetability. But if you want the best gas mileage and still gain a little excel. get the 3.73's with your 6 speed, but you will barely notice a change. I still run the 3.42's in my m6.

Another major factor in the choice of gear ratio is your rear tire, or slick diameter. If you're running 25" diameter tires and 3.73s you can be geared lower than with 4.10s and tall rear tires.
For example; one of my friends with a Pro-Street Camaro has 4.56 gears, but he also has very large slicks that are almost 32’ tall. His trap RPM is around 6K, which is the same as my Z28 with 3.73s and 26” ET Streets.

Definitely 3.73s if it's an auto car. My car runs like a raped ape.
And I can keep going on up to 150 if I want to... I was worried it would fall flat on it's face beyond 115 or so, but it doesn't!

Re: 3.73 gears or 4.10 ?? thats the question
We bought our car with 3.73's in it and blew that out last year (eek), personally I loved it, I could go on the freeway and get up to like 120mph easily (not that i did that a lot). Well now we have a 4.10 and...I liked the 3.73 more. Everyone knows the 4.10 is gonna be sweet on the track...but that's just about it. Gas mileage is less, theres more shifting, and (I hope its just not my car) when I hit about 80ish mph on the freeway it seems like the car wants to blow up...no more topping out the camaro anymore :[
Re: 3.73 gears or 4.10 ?? thats the question
I've got the 4.10 with the M6 and it has it's moments where I absolutly love and then some when I hate it. Makes around town driving more fun, and 6th gear super usable, but although it makes WOT acceleration better, it will only be from a roll or on DRs becasue once it starts making any good power normal street tires are teh suk. The top end does suffer some but how often do you race to 150. My suggestion is if you get the 4.10 get spare rims and tires for the track.
Re: 3.73 gears or 4.10 ?? thats the question
3.90's!! I have run 4.10's and 4.30's in my M6 and I must say that with the 4 series gears the car ran out of steam around 6000rpm but with the 3.90's it feels like it pulls to 6400rpm pretty strong.
Re: 3.73 gears or 4.10 ?? thats the question
Hey thanks alot guys, I appreciate the input. I guess the other part of the question should have been.... Will the upgrade from 3.42 to 3.73 be noticeable enough to justify the money spent, or since I am going to fork out the cash should I just go with the 4.10 If the 3.73 are at least noticeable than I would stick with those.
Call me greedy but I love the power from take off, as well as being able to pull past rice and noodles in 5th gear on the freeway. Besides it seems as though 4.10s require a 12 bolt sooner or later, so thats just another hurdle down the road. Well that settles it....3.73's it is thanks alot guys!
