3.42's on a 97 auto?

Does the VIN on the door by the RPO codes match the VIN on the dash? If it does I'd visit the dealer and have them run it (think it's called VISS or something) just to double check and should let you know what the car was stock. FWIW my car came with 2.73 and I swapped in a complete 3.42 rear out of an M6 car in it - so the door RPO still reads GU2.

Yes, it came from the factory with a 6 speed. 3.42s were not available from the factory with the A4.

So either the door isn't original, or the A4 tranny isn't original .

alright well cool, thanks for all the input everyone. the tranny feels really smooth and shifts gears pretty quick so maybe it was swapped in and doesn't have too many miles on it. hopefully
