26 vs 28 spline

I am rebuilding a rear for my GTA, and the one I bought has 26 spline axles. I think Moser sells new 28 spline axles. I have not bought the rest of the internals, so is the $235 going to make that much of a difference, or should I put that money into the bank for the future 12 bolt if I ever toast this?

mike, don't worry about it. you aren't putting out that much power to twist the axles, yet.

That is my thought, but say N2O or forced induction......is it really going to make that much of a difference?

I knew you would know. I need to just call you first!

Re: 26 vs 28 spline

i can't say at what level a 26 spline will break over a 28 spline. but everyone talks about how weak a 7 5/8 10 bolt is anyway. one day i'll break one. two cars running 11s on the bottle you know.

Thanks!

Re: 26 vs 28 spline

How far are you planning to go, with this rebuild? If you are contemplating a spline count change, then you're obviously planning for a new differential. Add new gears, seals, and bearings - and you'll be close to $1,000 in parts. Add an aluminum cover - another $150. Any labor will take you even higher (if you can't do it yourself) - see where I'm going.

I'm in the rebuild vs. buy stage, right now. I figure I'll have $1500 - $1700 in redoing my 10 bolt right (I'd have to pay someone to build it). For another $1,000 I can have a Strange / Moser. I currently don't have the power to bend a 28 spline axle - but I might be able to blow up a 10 bolt, under the right (wrong) circumstances.

Re: 26 vs 28 spline

The main difference between the 26 & 28 spline Axle shafts is the 28 splines make for a tighter fit with mating parts with no backlash. They are not stronger material wise per se then the 26 spline shafts.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33731

$330

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33731

$160 plus 70 for rebuild kit

?$150 for install

$710 total. Another $100 give or take for aluminum cover. Not even close to $1500. If it were $1500, I would get a 12 bolt. If you look at those ebay deals, the diff is new. I will watch for a take off or low mileage used.... My goal is $600 total.

$2100 for a moser, plus brakes.

The two items you linked are not compatible.

Nice. Oops. Good thing I haven't ordered anything.

But, these are a good comparison for pricing. I just need to be careful ordering.

This was supposedly a 28 spline rear out of a 89, but I pulled an axle just to make sure. Glad I did!

Thanks for the input everybody! Good ideas start somewhere!

Re: 26 vs 28 spline

I think you are looking at the "HP" unit, on E-bay. I've been looking at the "pro" version and the Eaton - they are both about $500 @ Jeg's. (I figure since I'm in there, might as well look at using the premium stuff.)

I figured about $300 for axles, $200 for gears (in big round numbers). Add in a full bearing and seal kit and labor to put it all together, and I'm in the neighborhood of $1,500 (once again, big round numbers).

I'm sure I can knock a few bucks off by using e-bay, and getting some free labor. I may well go the same route as you are. I just don't know what my ultimate HP goal is yet, to make the final decision.

Good luck, whichever way you decide to go.
