1994 Camaro 4L60E Downshift Problems

Hi

I am new here, so Hi everyone!!

I am looking for some help here. I bought my 1994 Camaro Z28 about 2 weeks ago. It is in amazingly good shape, and runs and drives beautifully.. That is until last night. It still drives fine, but when you manually downshift the car into a lower gear to hold you back down the hills, the rpm drops down to about 1000, and seems to stay in 4th gear. It will just roll, nothing ever downshifts to slow the car. I can put it right into first and over 30mph, and it doesnt do anything (and I know you can't normally do that). However the strange thing is when it is doing that, if you give it a shot of gas, the car will respond as if it is in the proper gear I have selected, but will go back to rolling freely. The car upshifts beautifully, whether I hold the gears manually or put it in OD and let it shift itself. To me it seems like it must be something in the electronics because the actual trans. shifting shifts nice and tight. I am not familiar with these electronic cars as all my other cars are from the '60's. If anyone has had a problem like this, and can steer me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Like I say I just got the car a couple weeks ago, so I haven't been able to obtain a shop manual yet.

Thanks

Well if you dont have any engine braking in the manual lower gears I would say there is and issue with the OVERUN CLUTCH or HUB on the sprag, This would not affect upshifts or auto downshifts only engine braking in lower gears

Is that something that would just quit working?? It worked coming down one hill last night, and then the next time it didn't work. Also, how can I check that, and what does it take to fix it??

Thanks

You would have to remove the trans and yes the hub can break suddenly

Do you think that it would harm the rest of the trans in any way to continue driving this for now until I get a chance to take it apart and have a look??

Are you sure your not out of speed range for manual mode down shifting settings. EG: stock down shift settings for a '94 A4 in manual mode at TPS below 25% are 2 -> 1 11 MPH, 3 -> 2 19 MPH and 3 -> 4 26 MPH. If you are exceeding those speeds the downshift will be delayed until the speed drops into that range.

Yep, it wont downshift at any speeds. It used to, when you would put it down a gear would hold your speed on the hills, kick up the revs a bit and resonate through the pipes, but nothin now, its like you're riding in 4th no matter which gear you are in (until you give it a shot of gas and read the revs!)

Certainly sounds like an over-run clutch / hub issue. A worse case scenario would be that the lugs have broken. You run the risk of them getting jammed in something else, and causing problems.
