12 Bolt: Whats a reluctor ring?

As the subject says. What does it do and whats the difference between having one and not having one? Thanks

It's the exciter for the magnet that the ABS system uses. Without it, no ABS.

On the Strange 12-bolt HD posi, the reluctor gear teeth are machined direclty into the carrier. You can see them on the left side of the carrier in this picture.
