10 bolt risk and me?

ok guys i have a 95 trans am with a moroso intake, jethot lt's, full exhaust, a 700-r with manual valve bodies and a 3000 stall. stock i have crapy 2.73's and with the stall i really want 3.73's but im not sure if i want to dish out the cost of the gears, install, and T/A gridle vs. a 12 bolt with 3.73. other then the mods i have now im looking at a 100 shot that i wont use out of the hole. what would you guys do in my situation, im a poor college kid thats trying to buld this car on a budget but if its very likely with this power that i will kill the rear i dont want to put all that money into it, on the otherhand paying for a 12 bolt would be a real stretch on my bank account.
thanks for any help.

Re: 10 bolt risk and me?

A4 cars are a lot less hard on rears than the M6 ones. In my case, I run 420rwhp thru a 10 bolt with a Pro Auburn limited slip, 3.42s, and a Summit Aluminum cover from Spohn. The key to its survival is tires that spin a little. I use, and have used,BFG DRs, because they hook decent, yet spin enough not to break anything. Your variable will be your 100 shot. If I were to use any power adder I would opt for a 12 bolt or 9".

The unavoidable weak link is the 7.5" ring gear. Nothing you can do will make it any stronger. I usually tell people that the best way to build a car is to start at the back and go forward. Having been a poor college guy I feel your pain, but I would buy the cheapest beer possible and save for a bigger rear.

Re: 10 bolt risk and me?

using the nitrous after the launch should be alot more kind to the rear though right? will launching with just intake, exhaust, and maybe some sticky tires kill my 10 bolt with a t/a gridle?

Re: 10 bolt risk and me?

Using nitrous will add to the strain, but not as bad as hitting it right out of the hole. It will also shock the transmission, too. If your limited slip unit is good and your transmission is good, then you should be fine for a while as long as you don't hook too hard. If your driveline is in questionable condition, then I would hold off on the spray. Either way, Drag Radials would be about the stickiest tire I would use. Nitrous is a very tempting mistress. I don't have the self control to use it myself...If 100 shot is good, then 200 is better, and so on...
