I was told by a few too shift at 5800-6000 rpms. But I was reading someone saying to shift at 5200 rpms....is this true?

6,000 RPM's.

Although, this year I think I'm gonna shift at around 5850, just to see if the revs may be a bit of overkill...

On the Auto '94TA, I'll probably shift @ 5800 1-2, & 5700 2-3.

If you watch the tach to shift ....you need to shift 200rpm sooner than your target. So if you still have the stock cam and rev limiter (5800) shift when the tach hits 5600. I have a hotcam and shiftlight set at 6200. The light takes the guess work out and lets you consentrate on driving....get one.

I make all my shifts at the lower right corner of the 6,000 hash mark. My tach is probably reading high. I can get a little better et shifting at 6150. Anything highter really hurts et. I haven't tried shifting at lower rpm. I bracket race and try to keep the shifting points the same for all shifts. I don't have a shift light (yet).

I know that my tach is 200 RPM high at idle and cruising, but I shift at 6200 1-2 and at 6000 on all the other shifts. Some think its overkill, but it didnt drop off that much when I dynoed it so I started shifting higher, and it started running quicker.

Wait a second...the stock rev-limiter is set at 5800 rpms?
I KNOW my tach is way off, cause I can take it up to atleast 6400...according to the stock tach

I was just wondering...and yeah..I figured that setting the shift light to ccome on a couple humnder rpms before would work best

Thanks for the replies!

With my HPP, I reset my rev limiter to 6200rpm on the '95, and actually decreased it (don't know my engine yet, or its reliability) on the '94TA. It seems on my '95, it likes the revs and the '94 being an auto likes to shift a little earlier. Anyways, it don't seem to pull any better at 6000rpm as it does lower, just seems to stay at rev longer the higher I set the limiter/shift points. I don't like that.

Anyone else?

BTW: Few bolt-ons on the '94 auto car, whereas I have pretty much all you can bolt to the '95 without it being classified differently, minus gears and suspension.

Given the M6 gearing and the power curve of a stock LT1 you want the shift to actually occur at around 5,500-5,600rpm. So when the tach starts approaching but is still below ~5,500, shift there.

I, for one will try this @ SLP day this spring, and let ya'll know the difference between my time trials before eliminations begin.

I'll try shifting between 55-5600 and then a pass 500rpm higher. I'll do the exact same approach and launch rpm and post the timeslips. Thanks!

Perhaps I am overkilling the rev-limit-ability of an internally stock LT1.
