When do you stop reducing track times by reducing weight?

A = F / M
this comes straight out of Newtons 2nd law of Forces.... gotta love Physics..

Isn't it amazing how our cars obey those "laws"?

Acceleration = Force divided by Mass

I almost asked why isn't that Acceleration = Power divided by Mass, but I didn't want to go there.

I will continue to pull out the weight to get a 'record'.
Once that has been done I bet I can put back some of the weight (ie carpet and door panels along with all other panels) and still be at a decent LOW weight by removing other unnessary weight, ie cutting some metal out.
there is a tone hidden behind the plastic parts in a car.
I sometimes get beat up b/c I do not run with interior, that it is not a street car, but you know what....it's mine and I enjoy running mid 12s with just headers/tune/suspension.

The tranny and diff are very heavy,if you could drop those you would go a lot faster!!!

Remember, you lose more time if it is ROTATING weight

Aluminum driveshaft, lighter internals(which also make it quicker revving!), gun drilled axles, drag wheels, etc.

Another thing: screw cat backs! go for either dumped true duals or just hack the I pipe off and throw out everything behind it.

Convert to a coilover setup, they're lighter!

Get rid of AC, HVAC, power steering, (maybe) power brakes, ABS. Only keep the bare essentials!

Don't get fat! Lose weight yourself... it's not all the car's fault

Remove the dash, wires everywhere will look like hell, but hey... noone will see them since they'll be losing!

Don't have rear seats anymore? Take out the seatbelts!

And if it truely is a strip only car, take a hammer to your mirrors and fab up some sheetmetal, combat air resistance.

Be creative!

Along the lines with what Injuneer is saying, similar holds true for the rule of thumb with hp vs time reduction. For an average 14 second street car I believe the general rule of thumb is for ever 10hp increase you get .1 seconds off your time. Add about 100 hp and you can expect to drop about 1 second. However, this doesn't hold true for like a 7 second drag car. To take 1 second off a 7 second drag car and drop it to 6 seconds takes far more than 100 hp.

Put your drivetrain in a Chevette/Monza
I have considered this. I mean pretty soon I will have removed so much stuff that I will have (for all intents and purposes) a really fast go kart.

In the real world wouldn,t you run out of traction at some point? Just for arguements sake, how would you hook up 400 horsepower in a 1000 lbs or less vehicle?
How much do Top fuel cars weigh? Traction seems to be thier biggest problem.

I got to think the TF cars traction problem is more of power than weight but see what you are saying...
I am under the impression that I can just keep removing stuff and then work on the suspension to get this heap to hook up.

Depends how you want to use your car.... a lot of the F-Body specific events require a full interior, two seats, matching seats, etc.

I always respected this car for running 9.04/155 as a basically stock (body and interior - obviously not the engine ) 97 SS convertible, weighing 3,900#. And when he ran it in PRO/Edelbrock Extreme Street (which required full interior, two seats, etc. - he was even required to block off the hood scoop) it ran 8.60/160mph at 3,550#. Hard to tell it from a stock 30th SS..... at least from the front......

Re: When do you stop reducing track times by reducing weight?

I have had alot more fun lately just doing off the wall stuff. When I first got the car back in 96 I did what everyone else was doing, a catback, cai, you know the basics but with an eye to what everyone else thought should be done.
But then I got to thinkin, why can,t I do this? or that?......because almost everyone lowers thier car and puts big rims on it.......thats how its done.
Alot of guys give me grief over my car, it sits like a 4x4, the rear tires stick out of the wheelwells, it has only a drivers seat, I have a homemade dryer duct ram air, etc. But its different and I built 90 percent of the car myself, and at the end of the day it makes ME happy and thats all that matters.
