Trans Blanket
Trans Blanket
Still a bit unclear on this. When is a trans blanket required? Can the floorboard be layered or do you need to wrap the tranny? The question might be an easy one for some but I've never used one before. I think my car is pretty much tech worthy down to 10.0. Just unclear on this point. Inform the uninformed.

TRANSMISSION, Automatic
All vehicles running quicker than 10.99 seconds or faster than 135 mph (except some Stock and Super Stock classes as noted under Class Requirements) and using an automatic transmission must be equipped with a transmission shield meeting SFI Spec 4.1 and labeled accordingly. ("Blanket"-type shield, appropriately labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1 permitted.) All non-blanket-type shields must incorporate two (or one, per manufacturer's instructions) 3/4 x 1/8-inch straps that bolt to the shield on each side and pass under the transmission pan, or transmission pan must be labeled as meeting SFI Spec 4.1.

Under 9.99/over 135 mph, you also need an SFI 29.1 flex-plate and an SFI 30.1 flex-plate shield.
Thanks for the reply Injuneer. Guess I better start looking for a tranny blanket then. I've already installed a SFI 29.1 flex plate. I've got a new set up (old one in the sig) that should run at least mid 11s NA and 10.60s or so on a 150 shot. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row for the LTx event.

At 10.99 You need an SFI 4.1 tranny shield. Most people use a shield instead of a blanket because the blanket retains heat in the transmission. A drag only car isn't bad because it's not being used constantly. The shield is to protect you in case the tranny explodes.
I saw a blown alcohol car blow up a transmission on the starting line while I was sitting in the water box. A clutch hub went through the tranny case, through the kevlar blanket, through the floor pan. It ricocheted off the passenger side door bar bending it then it went through the door blowing out the window before sailing about 300 feet over the grandstand. If the hub decided to go out the driver's side, it would have cut the driver's legs right off. The whole inside of the car was full of tranny oil and looked worse than it really was.
At 9.99 you need an SFI flexplate and SFI flexplate shield. Normally a tranny shield or blanket won't provide flexplate protection so a separate shield is required. Companies such as CSR make a one piece shield that covers the entire top of the transmission which covers the tranny and flexplate bellhousing. The shields are also required if your car runs faster than 135 mph in the 1/4.
All these SFI items are dated coded. If you're running quick enough to require them, they need to be replaced every few years. Flexplates need to be replaced every 3 years. The shields need to be replaced every 5 years. If you don't require these items as SFI rated, such as in an 11 second car, you can run them as long as you want.

OOpps! I already ordered the universal blanket from Summit. I'll keep the web sight addy and order one when the blanket expires. Thanks for the link!

Now that's a neat new product. I wonder how well it fits the f-body trans tunnel.
They're form fitting. They hug the case so unless the tranny is already hitting the floor, they fit with no problems.
I'll probably be getting the powerglide version next year when my shields expire. I use the CSR flexplate shield already because I can't fit the generic cheaper flexplate shield on my car without cutting out the firewall and tranny tunnel more. With that one piece shield covering the tranny body and bellhousing, you only need one shield so when it expires, you only need to recertify it or buy a new one.
These CSR shields are more expensive but they fit in tight areas a lot better than the cheaper shields.
