Track Collision Insurance/Liability Feedback
Track Collision Insurance/Liability Feedback
There was a collision this Saturday at Carlsbad between a Z28 and a Bullit. It brings up all kinds of questions and concerns over how various insurance companies handle this as well as personal liability.
I've checked with my carrier and they claim there's a clause in my coverage that would exclude any damage due to racing. I haven't actually looked at my policy to verfiy that but I would imagine it's there. A local guy had his car burn up on the track and the insurance company covered it! It was an insurance company out of Florida and he knew it specifically would cover racing. Anyone else have any experience to share on insurance and track accidents?
As far as personal liability, I know we sign a waiver before we race that essentially holds the track as harmless in the event of an accident, identifying the sport as dangerous, etc but what about laibility between drivers? Anyone ever been in a situation like this?
All views, opinions and experience welcome. Thanks folks.

Typical car insurance should have no coverage if the vehicle is used in racing.
I have the abilty to buy "competition vehicle insurance" for my race car. There's a couple of different packages available. You can either get replacement for appraised value or a book rate. Most race cars, it's better for an appraised value but that means you now have to get it appraised by someone who understands a race car.
The insurance covers anything and everything including storage or being transported however coverage stops the second the engine is started and used for racing. That means if the car burns down while sitting in the pits it's covered but as soon as I start to race, there's no coverage.
2 links that I'm aware of are both in Canada.

The only other type of insurance I'm aware of is what's offered by NHRA and IHRA when you join however I don't think either one offers insurance for the vehicle.

I never heard of any policy that would cover the car while racing. As far as the waiver goes, in the good 'ole USA you can always go ahead and sue anybody. But the waiver would provide some protection for the track. I don't think (as typically worded) it would protect another driver though.

If you read your insurance policy you will probably find a racing clause in it. I carry insurance on my race cars. It covers everything until I enter the water box.
A very good reason for joining the IHRA or NHRA and racing at sanctioned tracks is the extra medical coverage that you get.

Wasnt there a siut filed on some company that refused coverage after a track crash becuase he claimed the insurance company was condoning street racing. Or something like that?
Oops. they're just www.competition.ca now.
