Hey Russ,
I remember you from the GMHTP bolt-on shootout. Guess what?...I finally got headers...LOL, and a cam, and some heads, etc. etc. etc. I got bit pretty good by that "racing bug". Oh well, no more "bolt-on" racing for me.
Thanks for the suspension list.

Well, I cracked a piston playing with nitrous, so my car will no longer be of the bolt on kind anymore either. Got the motor out, and a bunch of stuff for it so far. I'm goin to try and drop off the bottom end to get built this week!

Suspension mods I have are: 6 point cage, BMR stb, lca (boxed), sub connectors, panhard bar, Spohn torque arm. Still running the stock shocks with 75,000 miles on them and a 28 inch tire I have cut mostly low 1.6s and a few high 1.5s on the sixty.

I agree with the other guy if you are going to spray try to get down to a 3.73 or 3.42 gear or go with the 28" tire. If not you will run out of gear at the top end of the track. When I had the 26" ET streets the best 60 I had was mid 1.7s but this was also with the stock torque arm.

Best times to date are 11.69 @120 on the 26" tire and stock torque arm this is N/A. Best on the spray is 10.66 @ 132 and this is with the Spohn installed and on 28" Drags.

Are all of you that are claiming 4.10's are too much still running a 4 speed transmission? I was crossing the line at 5800 RPMs in 3rd gear with the stock motor and 4.10's. Wouldn't it stand to reason that with the new combo and nitrous I can simply utilize 4th gear?

I wouldn't trust the a4 in 4 th gear with that power level. I don't think the clutches will be able to hold that type of power in 4th gear. Besides, it will kill your gear transition going into 4th at the end...it is too tall of a gear. I have 4.11s in my car and redline at 6800rpm's....right now I'm going through the traps at 6300-6400rpm's running 118.83mph traps with 26x11.5 E.T. streets. I just got my NX S.H.O. kit and plan to run a 250-300 shot on my car but before I do that I will have to put a 29.5" tall tire to kill the gear in order to not run out of gear at the end of the track. With a 28.2" tall tire I could probalby run a 200 shot (estimated 133-134 traps) without running out of gear at the end. If I were you I would estimate your planned mph and your planned max rpm and put the biggest tire on the car you can and gear it so you are going through the traps around your max rpm. Remember taller tires will hook a lot better than smaller diameter tires.

Matt
P.S.-- Do a search for online gear calculations and play with the numbers in a gear calculator to choose different combos.

Thanks for the advice Matt, but if there's one thing in this car I have confidence in it's the transmission. 4th will hold whatever I throw at it.

I wouldnt throw juice to any A4 in overdrive. Thats like me going into 5th with the juice. Just not feasible plus like Nostang said the ratio is going to kill you anyway. Just my .02

Anyone that has a fear of what a 700 or 4L60E will hold should have someone who knows what they're doing build it. Pure and simple...Everyone thinks throwing a "Trans-Slop" shift kit in will solve all the A4's problems...That particular kit actually makes the transmission self destruct.
When I build a racing 700/4L60E I address the weak points, such as pressure AND holding power. Holding power is increased by adding surfuce area to a clutch, band, or what applies it. How many people have a "wide" 2-4 band in their A4's? How many people have a Sonnax "oversised" 4th servo apply piston? How many people have (7) Raybestos "Blue" 3-4 frictions...The stock 700/4L60E only holds (6). How many people have the knowledge to know to take the "load release springs" out of the 3-4 clutch pack? How many people know what a heavier Art Carr, or Sonnax slide spring does?
In an A4 ANY external shift kit is like putting a Ban-Aid on a bullet wound.

The only point I'm trying to make is, don't underestimate an A4 until you have the right person build it.

You can gain...

additional/usuable 3rd gear RPM by having the clutch lock in third gear. You are looking at about 300 rpm drop once the clutch engages. I ran a 50 shot, locked in third with 28" Hoosiers, 4.56 gear, to right around 6400-6500 in the traps.

I have now went back to a 4.10 gear to not torture the engine through the traps. I lost about 600 rpm by doing this. The key is... get the converter to lock. You will be pleasently suprised as to the extra kick you get. You can then MPH with M6 cars!
